It’s
something to know you have someone on your
side when it seems there is no way out. |

Domestic violence is a crime. No one deserves to
be abused. If you know someone who is being abused
and is in danger, HELP IS AVAILABLE.
Tell the person to:
- CALL OUR
CONFIDENTIAL HOTLINE AT (757) 723-7774.
(TTY/TDD number: (757) 723-6862.)
- Do not get
trapped in the kitchen or bathroom. Stay out of
rooms where there are weapons such as guns or
knives. Do not threaten your abuser with a
weapon.
- Plan an
escape route.
- Take your
children with you.
- Know where
to go and how to get there. Consider going to a
domestic violence shelter or the home of a
family member or friend. Or, go to a public
place, such as a hospital, shopping center, or
police or fire station.
- Keep a
list of important telephone numbers of family,
friends, doctors, and shelters.
- Gather
important documents such as identification
papers, marriage, school and birth certificates,
and insurance information.
- If time,
gather your checkbook, money and credit cards,
medicines, keys, clothing, and toys. Put aside
emergency money if possible. Also, hide an extra
set of car keys.
- If
you’ve been hurt, go to the emergency room.
Get medical attention right away and call the
police.
- You are
not alone. Get help. Talk with someone close to
you, a friend, colleague, workplace counselor or
church counselor.
- Call the police.
