Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week:  February 5– 9, 2007

Domestic violence doesn’t necessarily start in adulthood. The seeds of victimization and violence start early. The Department of Justice consistently finds that girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence - almost three times the average for women as a whole. More than half of teens (57%) know friends or peers who have been physically, sexually, or verbally abused (Liz Claiborne, 2005). A study on domestic violence among teens found that as many as one third of high school and college students will experience violence in a relationship during their dating years (Liz Claiborne, 2005). Nationally, nearly a quarter of teen girls between 16 and 19 who are victims of homicide are murdered by a current or previous boyfriend (US DOJ, 2001).

The U.S. Congress first declared February 6-10, 2006 as National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week. Senator Crapo, together with Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton, Joe Lieberman and Lisa Murkowski introduced a resolution on November 13, 2006, calling for February 5 - 9, 2007, to be designated “National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week.” The Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Initiative was spearheaded by teenagers across the nation who chose to take a stand and put a stop to teen dating violence.

September 25, 2007 It’s Time To Talk About Domestic Violence Day

Liz Claiborne Inc. and its partners are joining forces for It's Time to Talk Day on September 25, 2007 as a way to encourage greater public dialogue about domestic violence.

Around the country, talk radio, government officials, domestic violence advocates, businesses, schools and the public-at-large will take a moment - or more - to talk openly about an issue that affects nearly one in three women at some point in their lifetime. In fact, millions of talk radio listeners around the country were reached with the message since the inception of It’s Time To Talk Day in 2004.

Take a moment to talk about domestic violence:

  • At work, ask your employer to address this issue and help employees who are in need by putting domestic violence hotline numbers in common spaces (i.e. lunch rooms, bathrooms, bulletin boards).
  • Ask at your local school to see if the issue of dating violence is being addressed and urge them to adopt the Love Is Not Abuse curriculum to prevent teen dating violence.
  • Contact your local domestic violence organization to find out what they need – beyond money, they might need household goods, toys, cloths and other things you might be able to provide.

Click here for more ideas on how you can get involved.

Special Keynote SpeakerJanine Latus, author of If I Am Missing Or Dead: A Sister's Story of Love, Murder, and Liberation.

In April 2002, Janine Latus's youngest sister, Amy, wrote a note and tape it to the inside of her desk drawer. "Today Ron Ball and I are romantically involved," it read, "but I fear I have placed myself at risk in a variety of ways. Based on his criminal past, writing this out just seems like the smart thing to do. If I am missing or dead this obviously has not protected me..." READ MORE
